The story of a Ballyfermot man who makes curries for homeless people in Dublin has blown up on Reddit

Brian is a volunteer with A Lending Hand and his story is taking over the internet.

A LENDING HAND is a volunteer-led organisation that provides warm dinners to homeless people in Dublin city.

Every Monday evening, volunteers distribute food and urgent supplies to homeless people on the steps of the Central Bank.

Earlier this week, A Lending Hand posted a status on Facebook advising that one of their volunteers Brian Birkett needed a lift from Ballyfermot to Dame Street to transport fifty homemade curries.

“So this gent who is retired, makes our homeless pals over 50 4-1 chicken curry rice and chips every Monday night,” they wrote. “Tonight he’s stuck for a lift from Ballyfermot to Dame Street and back, would any of you lovely people be able to help him out?”

Brian was inundated with offers and quickly got sorted for a lift thanks to Gala Cabs, but people were touched by his commitment to helping feed Dublin’s homeless people.

The post racked up hundreds of likes with many praising him as “an unsung hero”.

And now Brian’s story has gone viral on Reddit and Imgur.

This morning, he’s sitting atop Reddit’s homepage and has garnered thousands of comments from people all over the world.

Need more people like Brian.

Keira from A Lending Hand explained to DailyEdge.ie that all of the organisation’s volunteers pay for supplies out of their own pocket.

We all cook very Monday night from our homes and make sandwiches, collect clothes, toiletries, and sleeping bags. It all comes out of our own pockets as we are not registered. We are not allowed to take cash, only vouchers.

However she advised that anybody who wants to help out can donate to an existing account in Dan O’Brien Butchers in Northside Shopping Centre.

As for Brian, the man of the moment?

Brian comes in to town every Monday and drops his curries off to us and we serve the people of Dublin in need. He’s a good friend – we all are, we’re like a family now.
